Biophysical Drug Rehab
Locating a Biophysical Drug Rehab facility can mean life or death.
A drug rehab using the biophysical model of addiction treatment treats the physical effects of addiction and then addresses the emotional/psychological issues involved with the addiction without the use of medications or replacement drugs. A drug or alcohol addict’s body suffers the ravages of addiction along with the individual. Most addicts are malnourished to a greater or lesser degree and addiction and the environment of addiction can make one more susceptible to a variety of diseases including cirrhosis, hepatitis or HIV. A biophysical drug rehab emphasizes treating the drugs’ effects on the body to return the addict to a much better physical condition and then implementing a social education program to empower the addict to return to a fulfilling, drug-free life.

Upon entering a biophysical drug rehab, an addict will first go through the withdrawal process in a drug-free detox. Addicts are often given a specific combination of vitamins, minerals and other nutritional supplements to ease the withdrawal symptoms and help the addict’s body begin to recover from the effects of their drug abuse.
The biophysical model bases its treatment in part on research that shows that residuals of drugs used by an addict get stored in the body. Once an addict has completed detox and is physically stable, a more intensive detox program may be implemented. This type of program would involve a variety of physical activities including running to promote sweating. Some biophysical drug rehabs may employ the use of a sauna; an individual, under close supervision, would spend a specific amount of time in a sauna to promote sweating (the sauna should be a low temperature sauna). These activities serve to help the addict “sweat out” drug residuals that have been stored in their bodies. An addict participating in an addiction treatment program using these methods, would be closely monitored at all times and would participate in a nutritional program in conjunction; the addict would continue a tailored regimen of vitamins, minerals and other nutritional supplements and their diet would be monitored to ensure that they are receiving ample, proper nutrition.
This portion of a biophysical drug rehab program is intended to restore the individual to a healthy physical state and to correct chemical imbalances that may result from the toxins left in the body after drug use. After this portion of the drug rehab program in completed, the individual would participate in the social education portion of the treatment program to address the emotional/psychological issues that lead to or resulted from the addiction. This part of the addiction treatment program might, for example, include classes intended to help the individual learn improved communication skills and skills needed to handle or avoid situations that, in the past, would have led to drug use.
Biophysical drug rehab programs are typically residential programs varying in length from 3 to 6 months or more. Just like any other drug rehab program, the individual's recovery program should be tailored to fit the needs of that individual.
