Drug Rehab

There are a number of drug rehabs that use a variety of drug and alcohol addiction treatment methods. Some of those methods are:

Medical Detoxification is a drug rehab type process whereby individuals are systematically withdrawn from addicting drugs in an inpatient or outpatient setting, sometimes under a physician’s care. Detoxification should not be considered a treatment method. Rather, it is more appropriately considered the first step in treatment. Many drug and alcohol rehab centers include a detox program designed to treat the immediate physical effects of stopping drug use. Sometimes medications are used for detoxification from opiates, nicotine, benzodiazepines, alcohol, barbiturates, and other sedatives. Often with drugs like alcohol, benzodiazepines and barbiturates, detoxification may be a medically necessary and untreated withdrawal may be extremely dangerous, possibly even fatal.

Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Rehab differ in the types and intensity of services offered. This treatment generally costs less than residential or inpatient treatment and may be more suitable for addicts who are stably employed or who have extensive support from family, friends or other social groups. Low-intensity programs may only offer basic drug education and warnings about abusing drugs and alcohol. Other outpatient drug and alcohol rehab centers offer programs that are more comparable to programs offered in residential drug and alcohol rehab centers.

Short-Term Residential Drug Rehab provide more intensive treatment programs than those often offered in an outpatient setting, but are relatively short in duration. These short-term residential treatment programs are often based on a modified 12-step approach. This type of drug rehab program was originally designed to treat alcohol problems, but with the marked increase in cocaine abuse in the mid 1980's, many began to treat illicit drug abuse and addiction as well as alcohol addiction. The original residential treatment model consisted of 3 to 6 weeks of hospital-based inpatient treatment. This would generally be followed by an extended outpatient program and perhaps participation in a self-help group, such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

Prison-Based Drug Rehab Programs Offenders with drug and alcohol addiction may have a number of treatment options while incarcerated, including drug education classes, self-help programs, and treatment based on a variety of drug and alcohol addiction treatment approaches. As an example, the TC model has been studied extensively and can be quite effective in reducing drug use and recidivism to criminal behavior. Other approaches used may include programs based on the therapeutic community or residential milieu therapy models, or the Criminon program. Prison-based drug and alcohol rehab center programs aim to give the addict the ability to return to society as drug-free productive individual.

Long-Term Residential Drug Rehab provide 24 hour care, usually in a nonhospital setting. Long-term drug and alcohol rehab centers provide intensive addiction treatment for individuals who might not benefit from a short-term drug rehab program or a less intensive outpatient drug rehab program. The treatment an addict receives may be one of a variety of available addiction treatment approaches including the Disease Model, the Social Education Model or the Biophysical Model.
