Do I Need Long Term Drug Rehab

Long-term drug rehab provides intensive addiction treatment for individuals who might not benefit from a short-term drug rehab program or a less intensive outpatient drug rehab program. The treatment an addict receives may be one of a variety of available addiction treatment approaches.

One common model for long-term inpatient drug rehab is the Therapeutic Community (TC) model. The Therapeutic Community Model for drug rehab is a specialized type of inpatient program. The model serves those with long-term addictions often with series criminal justice issues and seriously impaired social skills. A patient in a TC setting typically has a more severe problem than those in other types of treatment.

TCs are very structured programs ranging in length from 6 months to 1 year. A TC consists of the residents, staff and therapists. The TC Model for addiction treatment tries to address various problems of these severe addicts emphasizing complete abstinence from drugs and alcohol, resocialization, personal accountability and social productivity.  Long-term inpatient drug rehabs may employ a variety of other models including the Disease Model, the Social Education Model or the Biophysical Model.

Long-term drug rehab provides an addict with an added benefit. It gives the addict time; time to live life drug free. An addict participating in a drug rehab program for a number of months may have an advantage over one who completes a 28 day program, for example. Most long-term drug rehabs provide a safe, nurturing, drug-free environment for their residents. If an addict has been able to live drug or alcohol free for an extended time and has received intensive drug addiction treatment, when they go back to the environment they were living in while they used, they stand a substantially better chance at staying clean and sober. Someone who has attended a drug rehab program for a month or less and has basically been through withdrawal and “the basics” and has very little time drug free and may face greater pressure when returning to the environment they had been using in.

A drug rehab should be chosen based on the individual addict’s needs. Not all programs work for all addicts. Long-term drug rehab programs provide addicts who are suffering from severe addictions, those with little support from family or friends, those who have been through other types of programs and have a history of relapse, and countless others an opportunity to return to a healthy, productive life free of drug addiction or alcohol addiction.
