Randy and I met in college our sophomore year. I was working my way through as a part time dental assistant to get my (DDS) Doctor of Dental Surgery and Randy was working on his bachelor’s degree in Engineering. We were so happy and full of life and it seemed that there was nothing that could stop us from climbing the latter to success.
In the spring of 2004 our world came crashing down. Randy was in a fatal car accident on his way home one night from working late on a project. It was raining and he lost control of his truck sliding into the car in front of him which caused five other vehicles to collide on the dark interstate. I received the call around 1:05 a.m. that there had been an accident and I should come right way to the hospital.
The next few days were torturous; Randy was on life support and had a collapsed lung, broken ribs and a broken leg. He was on morphine and couldn’t even open his eyes. I was so scared I would lose him and I spent everyday by his side waiting for him to pull through. On March 27, 2004 he had a change for the better and they took him off life support. He was still however in a lot of pain but, he was a live and out of any real danger so we thought.
On April 10, 2004 he was released from the hospital and I took him home. Over the next months he continued to get his strength back and eventually was walking normal again. Life started to get back to what it was before school, work, and all the things that happy couples do. We were going to get married in June of 2005 and I was so thankful that all the horror was behind us. But, there was something that just wasn’t right about Randy. I later found out he was addicted to the prescription pain medication the doctor had been giving him.
On December 24, 2004 I found six different prescriptions from different doctors for the same thing Oxycontin and I knew he was in trouble. I confronted him later that day and he gave me some crazy story about how he needed them to function and the family doctor was a jerk who didn’t understand how much pain he was in. A few days later I started calling around to the different doctor’s offices to let them know what was going on. With in weeks he found out and was furious with me. I’d never seen him like that before he was not the same man I had fallen in love with. I soon realized he was getting the oxycontin from the streets since he could no longer get it from the doctors anymore.
I didn’t know what to do, how was I going to help him? Then the worst thing possible happened. I found a needle and a bag of heroin in his bathroom drawer. I called his parents and asked them to come over and we decided to confront him. I knew he would just deny it all and that we needed professional help. That’s when we found Drug Rehab Locator. I talked to the man on the phone for about 2 hours and he helped us set up an Intervention for Randy.
The next day we planned to have dinner at his parent’s house and the lady who was sent to do the intervention was there too. She had instructed me earlier of the things I should have prepared for him such as clothes. I packed him everything he would need for the next 3-4 months and put it in the trunk of my car. That night was one of the most painful nights I can remember. Randy was furious, he was cursing us all and pulling at his hair. I thought he was going to throw his dinner glass at my head at one point. This struggle went on for hours and I was beginning to lose hope. The interventionist asked Randy at that point if she could speak with him alone and he said, yes. They were talking for about 45 minutes and when they came out of the dinning room he was in tears. He grabbed hold of me and hugged me so tight and promised he was going to be ok. He had agreed to get help.
As the months went by and Randy got better, I could once more see the light at the end of the tunnel. The way Drug Rehab Locator helped us find him a place to handle his addiction and regain his self respect and responsibility was phenomenal. Randy graduated from the program in April of 2005 and we got married in June. I am now pregnant with our first child and we are currently living the life we always wanted thanks to the Intervention Angel and loving staff at Drug Rehab Locator.
