A variety of illicit drugs are available in Alabama from within the state and from other states. Marijuana is grown in Alabama and the manufacture of methamphetamine is increasing. These drugs along with cocaine are often transported into and through the state. Mexican and African American drug trafficking organizations with extensive networks are largely responsible for the transport and distribution of illicit drugs in the state. Another drug-related issue for Alabama is money laundering. Businesses that handle large amounts of cash such as used car lots or Mexican restaurants are used to launder money made from drug trafficking.

In the years from 2002 to 2004, more than 12,800 individuals were admitted to Alabama drug rehabs for cocaine abuse and addiction. Cocaine often arrives in Alabama from Houston, TX or Atlanta, GA. Primarily Mexican drug trafficking organizations and to a lesser degree African American drug trafficking organizations are largely responsible for bringing cocaine into Alabama where much of it is converted to crack. The threat cocaine poses to the state is significant and falls only slightly behind the threat from methamphetamine.

Between 2002 and 2004 approximately 550 individuals were admitted to Alabama drug rehab programs for abusing heroin. Little is known about any specific groups that are responsible for transporting heroin into the state, but it is available in areas like Mobile, Birmingham, Montgomery and Auburn. It is believed that heroin enters the state primarily in private and commercial vehicles. The number of individuals seeking heroin drug rehab has increased significantly in some areas of the state indicating that the drug’s abuse is on the rise.

A significant portion of Alabama drug rehab population is comprised of individuals seeking drug rehab for methamphetamine abuse. There has been a decline in methamphetamine manufacture in Alabama; 404 methamphetamine lab incidents in 2004, 276 in 2005 and 147 in 2006. Despite that decline methamphetamine became the primary illicit drug threat in Alabama in 2005 and remained the primary threat in 2006. Mexican drug trafficking organizations have made more methamphetamine available to citizens of Alabama. These organizations are responsible for the majority of methamphetamine, particularly ice, entering the state. It is expected that the number of individuals needing drug rehab for methamphetamine addiction will continue to rise until law enforcement is able to stop these drug trafficking organizations.

There were more than 17,000 admissions to Alabama drug rehabs for marijuana addiction in from 2002 to 2004. Marijuana is undoubtedly the most abused illicit drug in Alabama. A significant amount of marijuana is grown in state and more is smuggled into the state by drug trafficking organizations. More than 91,600 marijuana plants were seized by the Alabama Marijuana Eradication Program in 2005 and, in 2006, 1,911 kilos of marijuana were seized by federal authorities.

The abuse of prescription drugs like Hydrocodone, Vicodin, and OxyContin are responsible for as many as 4,000 individuals entering Alabama drug rehab from 2002 to 2004. Individuals often go from doctor to doctor to obtain prescriptions for these drugs. Others obtain prescription drugs through forged prescriptions, theft and via the Internet.

Law enforcement professionals in Alabama are concerned with other drugs as well; club drugs. Drugs like Ecstasy (MMDA), GHB and Psilocybin are abused particularly in areas that are home to colleges and universities. Private and commercial vehicles are often responsible for bringing these dangerous drugs into the state. Ecstasy has been the primary drug of choice among groups using club drugs, but that may be changing. It seems that ice is replacing Ecstasy as users’ choice club drug.
