Drug Rehab Arkansas (cont..)

Illicit drugs are widely available in Arkansas due in part to the fact that drugs smuggled into the US are transported to the state for use by Arkansans and for distribution to other parts of the country. Arkansas’ interstates, I 40 in particular, are traveled by commercial and private vehicles transporting various illicit drugs. Methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana are the primary drugs of choice in Arkansas.

Between the years of 2003 and 2005, approximately 9,300 individuals were admitted to Arkansas drug rehab programs for cocaine abuse and addiction. Crack cocaine and powder cocaine are pervasive in the state. Primarily found in inner cities, crack cocaine is spreading to more rural areas along with gangs and increased violent crime. Crack is cheap, easy to make and highly addictive. These properties have lead to growing numbers of individuals abusing the drug. In 2006, over 226 kilograms of cocaine were seized by federal law enforcement officers.

Almost 3,000 individuals were admitted to Arkansas drug rehab programs for addiction to heroin or other opiates from 2003 to 2005. Heroin addiction accounts for only a small percentage of those admissions. Mexican black tar is the primary type of heroin found in Arkansas and is smuggled into the state by Mexican trafficking organizations. There have been a few instances of heroin entering the state via the mail or other parcel service. While law enforcement agencies in Arkansas do not list heroin as a significant problem for the state, there were more than 4 kilos of heroin seized by authorities in 2006.

From 2003 to 2005, nearly 13,000 individuals were admitted to Arkansas drug rehab programs for addiction to amphetamines, particularly methamphetamine. Methamphetamine is the main concern in Arkansas’ drug problem. Some of the state’s methamphetamine is smuggled into the state from Mexico and some is manufactured locally. Arkansas is largely rural and the chemicals needed to produce methamphetamine are widely available so Arkansas is considered by some criminal groups to be ideal for manufacturing meth. In 2006, approximately 35 kilos of methamphetamine were seized and there were 350 methamphetamine lab incidents.

Admissions to Arkansas drug rehab programs for marijuana addiction dropped from 5,383 in 2003 to 2,437 in 2005. Marijuana is widely available in Arkansas and is in demand. Arkansas has a warm climate and a long growing season, making it ideal for criminals to grow marijuana. Some marijuana is smuggled into the state from Mexico as well. Newer asset forfeiture laws have resulted in marijuana growers using leased hunting lands, timberlands or national forest lands to grow their crops. In 2006, almost 950 kilos of marijuana were confiscated in Arkansas.

As many as 3,900 admissions to Arkansas drug rehab programs may be attributed to prescription drug addiction. Prescription drugs like Vicodin, OxyContin, morphine, pseudoepedrine, Dilaudid and Demerol are the most commonly abused and most commonly diverted prescription-only drugs in Arkansas. These drugs are obtained a number of ways: through the illegal sale and distribution by those in the healthcare field, by individuals who go from doctor to doctor to get multiple prescriptions, through forged prescriptions, theft by healthcare employees, robbery of pharmacies or purchase via the Internet.
