Colorado Drug Rehab

Of the more than 4.6 million residents of Colorado in 2005, over 32,500 were admitted to Colorado drug rehab programs. Colorado is ranked 25nd in the nation in terms of violent crime which is often directly or indirectly related to the drug trade. Illicit drugs like cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin and various “club” drugs plague Colorado. Mexican drug trafficking organizations are largely responsible for moving cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana into and through the state while much of the supply of club drugs comes from several sources overseas. It has been estimated approximately 453,000 residents of Colorado need but are not receiving drug rehab for illicit drug or alcohol abuse.

From 2003 to 2005, some 10,930 individuals were admitted to Colorado drug rehabs for cocaine treatment. Cocaine often arrives in Colorado from Mexico or from Border States to be sold in state or moved further to other states. Primarily Mexican drug trafficking organizations are largely responsible for bringing cocaine into Colorado where some of it is converted to crack. Federal law enforcement personnel seized more than 135 kilograms of cocaine in 2006.

Heroin accounted for over 5,000 admissions to Colorado drug rehab programs between 2003 and 2005. It is believed that heroin use is increasing in Colorado. Mexican black tar and brown tar can be found in larger cities and surrounding areas. Mexican drug trafficking organizations are responsible for smuggling heroin into the state and for distributing it throughout the state. 4 kilos of heroin were confiscated by federal authorities in 2006.

The number of individuals entering Colorado drug rehab programs is still significant despite a drop in the number of local manufacturing labs. The number of methamphetamine lab incidents has dropped from 453 in 2002 to only 85 in 2006. This number might suggest that the methamphetamine problem in Colorado has improved. However, it is believed that the drop in the amount of methamphetamine produced locally is due to the fact that methamphetamine production in labs in Mexico has increased. While the threat of local manufacturers is lessening, methamphetamine remains a significant threat to Colorado. Over 50 kilos of methamphetamine were seized by law enforcement in 2006.

Between 2003 and 2005 approximately 15, 400 individuals entered Colorado drug rehab programs for marijuana addiction. Marijuana is still the most abused illicit drug in Colorado. More than 650 kilos were confiscated by law enforcement in 2006. A significant amount of marijuana is grown in Mexico and smuggled into the state by drug trafficking organizations. Some marijuana is smuggled into Colorado from Canada and the Pacific Northwest.

Call

Nearly 18,000 individuals entered Colorado drug rehab programs from 2003 to 2005 for addiction to various prescription drugs. Drugs like Vicodin, Darvocet, Xanax and Oxycontin are often obtained through forged prescriptions, theft, the Internet and various other means. The diversion and the subsequent illegal use of these drugs is a major problem for Colorado.

Law enforcement professionals in Colorado are concerned with other drugs as well; club drugs. Drugs like Ecstasy (MMDA), GHB, LSD and Ketamine are abused particularly in areas that are home nightclubs and rave parties. Private and commercial vehicles are often responsible for bringing these dangerous drugs into the state. Asian gangs are largely responsible for distribution of these drugs. There is apparently a correlation between the trafficking of these drugs and other criminal activities like pornography and prostitution.
