From 2003 to 2004, over 18,000 individuals were admitted to Connecticut drug rehabs for cocaine abuse. Cocaine is a major problem in the state is smuggled into the state by drug trafficking organizations primarily by way of New York City. A large percentage of the cocaine that enters the state is made into crack and sold locally. It is believed that Puerto Rican and African American drug trafficking organizations control the sale of crack on the streets of Connecticut. It is likely that some cocaine entering the state originates in the south and western US before making its way to Connecticut. Some 46.8 kilos of cocaine were confiscated by federal law enforcement in 2006.

Heroin is a serious problem in Connecticut and was the drug of choice for over 35,000 individuals admitted to Connecticut drug rehab programs in 2003 and 2005. Heroin is a drug that is in high demand and it is very easy to come by in Connecticut. Heroin that is less expensive, but purer is widely available and attracting more and more users because it can be smoked rather than injected. There are a variety of criminal groups responsible for moving heroin into and through the state. Most of the heroin available here comes from New York City and arrives in the state via private or commercial vehicles or mail services. Nearly 40 kilos of heroin were confiscated by federal authorities in 2006.

Connecticut and Connecticut drug rehab programs do not appear to have as significant a problem with methamphetamine as other states currently have. The majority of methamphetamine found in the state is manufactured locally in small amounts.

Approximately 6,800 individuals entered Connecticut drug rehab programs for marijuana addiction in 2003 and 2004. Most of the marijuana in the state originally comes from Canada but some is cultivated locally in often sophisticated growing sites. Marijuana is still pervasive in the state and over 200 kilos was seized by authorities in 2006.

As many as 21,000 admissions to Connecticut drug rehab programs in 2003 and 2004 were for treatment for addiction to various prescription drugs. Drugs like Vicodin, and OxyContin are a growing problem; OxyContin in particular. OxyContin can have an effect very similar to that of heroin and individuals may change from OxyContin to heroin to feed their habit when the prescription drug becomes too expensive. Prescription drugs are often obtained through forged prescriptions, theft, the Internet and various other means. The diversion and the subsequent illegal use of these drugs is a major problem for Connecticut.

There are other drugs that plague Connecticut law enforcement agencies. Club drugs are easily obtained in the state. Drugs like Ecstasy (MMDA) come via post from places like Florida or Mexico or New York City and are very popular among college aged individuals.  PCP makes its way into Connecticut from Southwest states and New York City.
