As many as 21,000 admissions to Connecticut drug rehab programs in 2003 and 2004 were for treatment for addiction to various prescription drugs. Drugs like Vicodin, and OxyContin are a growing problem; OxyContin in particular. OxyContin can have an effect very similar to that of heroin and individuals may change from OxyContin to heroin to feed their habit when the prescription drug becomes too expensive. Prescription drugs are often obtained through forged prescriptions, theft, the Internet and various other means. The diversion and the subsequent illegal use of these drugs is a major problem for Connecticut.
There are other drugs that plague Connecticut law enforcement agencies. Club drugs are easily obtained in the state. Drugs like Ecstasy (MMDA) come via post from places like Florida or Mexico or New York City and are very popular among college aged individuals.
