The number of individuals citing cocaine as their drug of choice upon entering D.C. drug rehab facilities has decreased in; 1,889 admissions in 2002, 1,378 admissions in 2003 and only 395 admissions in 2004. Cocaine is the most significant drug-related problem in the state, particularly in the form of crack. Although drug-related violent crimes have decreased in recent years, the violence associated with the distribution and abuse of crack continues to be excessive. There is so much traffic moving to and from the capital every day that there is never a shortage for criminals selling illicit drugs. 64 kilos of cocaine were confiscated in the city in 2006.
From 2002 to 2004, 4,781 admissions to D.C. drug rehab were for treatment of heroin abuse. Heroin abuse is a significant issue in D.C. The city has many heroin abusers with long histories of abuse and there are plenty of heroin dealers to continue to feed their addictions. The majority of heroin found in D.C. originates in South America, but other sources supply the city as well, Southwest Asia, for example. Just over 12 kilos of heroin were confiscated during federal drug seizures in D.C. in 2006.

Methamphetamine does not pose as significant a threat in D.C. as it does in other parts of the country as evidenced by the number of admissions to D.C. drug rehab programs citing methamphetamine/ amphetamine abuse as the reason; from 2002 to 2004, there were only 27. The demand for methamphetamine in the city is small, but methamphetamine can be found mainly around the club scene. Drug trafficking organizations in California are primarily responsible for smuggling methamphetamine into the city. These criminal groups generally use parcel services to carry this illicit drug into D.C. Approximately 400 grams of methamphetamine were seized in D.C. in 2006.
Over 600 individuals admitted to D.C. drug rehabs from 2002-2004 reported marijuana as the primary drug of abuse. Marijuana is the most available and most abused illicit drug in D.C. Marijuana is abused by members of all walks of life and is available in a wide range of potency and amounts. Many of the criminal groups responsible for selling cocaine, crack and heroin on the streets are peddling marijuana as well. 29 kilos of marijuana were confiscated in the district in 2006.
