Drug Rehab Delaware (cont..)
In the years from 2003 to 2005, there were more than 4,500 admissions to Delaware drug rehabs for cocaine abuse. Cocaine is a major concern to law enforcement in Delaware. Cocaine in both powder and crack form are readily available. Cocaine is smuggled into the state by drug trafficking organizations from New York City or Philadelphia and it is believed that some drug trafficking organizations are relocating from those cities to Delaware to expand their markets. In 2006, almost 8 kilos of cocaine were seized by federal law enforcement.
Heroin is a serious and growing problem in Delaware and is responsible for over 6,700 admissions to Delaware drug rehab programs between 2003 and 2005. Heroin is mainly found in Northern Delaware, but its abuse is spreading throughout the state. Drug trafficking organizations that have moved their operations to Delaware from cities like New York and Philadelphia use Wilmington to sell their heroin and move it on to other parts of the state and surrounding states. The fact that cheaper grades of heroin are becoming more available is attracting younger users to the drug. This causes grave concerns for law enforcement. Less than 1 kilo of heroin was confiscated by federal authorities in 2006.

Almost 5,100 individuals entered Delaware drug rehab programs for marijuana addiction from 2003 to 2005. Most of the marijuana in the state comes from Southwest Border States and is smuggled into the state in commercial and private vehicles or shipping services and a small amount is cultivated. Marijuana use is still widespread in the state and is popular with adults as well as teens and college aged individuals from all walks of life. Approximately ½ kilo was seized by authorities in 2006.
The number of individuals admitted to Delaware drug rehab programs for methamphetamine abuse is much lower than those for heroin, cocaine or marijuana. However, methamphetamine is available in the state, particularly during the summer in the Rehoboth Beach area. The methamphetamine available in Delaware comes from large drug trafficking organizations based in Mexico or California or from smaller local drug trafficking organizations that produce it themselves. There have been no methamphetamine lab incidents in Delaware for the last 2 years.

As many as 1,580 admissions to Delaware drug rehab programs in 2003 and 2004 were for treatment for addiction to various prescription or club drugs. Drugs Percocet, Percodan, Tylox and Roxicet are widely abused in the state. Prescription drugs are often obtained through forged prescriptions, theft, the Internet and various other means. The diversion and the subsequent illegal use of these drugs is a major problem for Delaware. Club drugs, particularly ecstasy and GHB are popular at raves and clubs in metropolitan areas, college campuses and the Rehoboth Beach area. Drugs like Ecstasy (MMDA) come via post or shipping services or from criminal organizations from places like Canada, New York City, or the Caribbean.
