In 2004, approximately 14,850 individuals were admitted to Florida drug rehabs for cocaine abuse. Cocaine is the most serious menace in Florida. Cocaine in both powder and crack form are readily available. Most cocaine is smuggled into the state directly from producers in South America, but some makes its way from Mexico and Border States where. A great deal of the illicit drugs smuggled in through Florida come through Miami where some of it is consumed, but much of it is converted to crack and sold locally or moved on to other areas of the country to be sold or converted to crack. There are various drug trafficking organizations responsible for the distribution of cocaine powder and crack throughout Florida. Over 11,000 kilos of cocaine were seized by federal authorities in 2006.
As with cocaine, Florida is a chief ingress point for heroin from South American suppliers. Criminal organizations make use of the states easy access by water to smuggle heroin into the U.S. Once the heroin has entered the state, much will be moved on to other parts of the country via commercial and private vehicles, etc. Heroin abuse accounted for nearly 3,000 admissions to Florida drug rehab programs in 2004. South American heroin is pervasive in the Orlando and Tampa areas. More than 270 kilos of heroin were confiscated by federal authorities in 2006.

Methamphetamine is a growing concern to Florida law enforcement and admissions to Florida drug rehab centers for methamphetamine addiction are on the rise. Much of the state’s methamphetamine makes its way into the state from Border States at the hands of Mexican drug trafficking organizations although some comes from Texas or the Atlanta, GA area. Methamphetamine may also be manufactured locally practically anywhere in the state, particularly in the Tampa, Brevard County and Panhandle areas of the state. In the last 5 years, there have been over 800 methamphetamine lab seizures by local, state and federal authorities and 33.5 kilos of methamphetamine were seized by federal authorities in 2006.
Approximately 21,670 individuals entered Florida drug rehab programs for marijuana addiction in 2004. There is a booming business for marijuana growers in the state. Additionally, marijuana may come to Florida from Canada, Jamaica, Mexico, the Bahamas or the Caribbean. Federal law enforcement confiscated approximately 13,600 kilos of marijuana and 14.3 kilos of hashish in 2006.

Over 50,000 admissions to Florida drug rehab programs in 2004 can be attributed to the abuse of prescription or club drugs. Vicodin, OxyContin, Xanax and methadone are the most abused in the state contributing to a growing number of drug rehab admissions and deaths associated with drug overdose.
