Over 4,400 individuals were reportedly admitted to Idaho drug rehab centers for amphetamine/methamphetamine abuse from 2002 to 2004. As in many states, methamphetamine abuse in Idaho is pervasive and indiscriminate with regards to ethnicity, social status, etc. Laws restricting the sale of drugs used to manufacture methamphetamine have resulted in production of methamphetamine moving to Mexico. With the increased movement of methamphetamine production to Mexico, the number of methamphetamine lab seizures in the state has dropped from 122 in 2002 to 12 in 2006, but the availability and abuse of the drug is ever-growing. Crystal methamphetamine is overtaking methamphetamine HCL in popularity. 6 kilos of methamphetamine were seized by law enforcement in Idaho in 2006.
Marijuana abuse accounted for approximately 3,318 admissions to Idaho drug rehab centers from 2002 to 2004. Marijuana is considered to be the most used illicit drug in the state and may be grown locally or smuggled into the state from other areas. Most marijuana originating from outside the state comes from Mexico with small amounts entering from Idaho’s border with Canada. “Homegrown” marijuana plots may be found on private property or on government owned lands. Some marijuana growers use indoor operations, as well. 188 kilos of marijuana were reportedly confiscated by federal law enforcement agencies in 2006.

Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, methadone and steroids account for the greatest concerns regarding prescription drug abuse in Idaho. Prescription drugs are obtained in a variety of ways. Individuals may go from doctor to doctor to obtain multiple prescriptions or they may forge prescriptions in order to get prescription drugs. The Internet poses a significant problem to those trying to curtail the illegal acquisition of pharmaceutical drugs. Club drugs like ecstasy and Ketamine are commonly abused by Idaho’s young adults and are frequently found at rave parties. It is likely that the ecstasy found in Idaho was smuggled in from Canada.
