Cocaine is regularly smuggled into the Chicago, Illinois area in metric ton amounts by Mexican drug trafficking organizations. The cocaine comes from Southwest Border states and is intended for sale in the state or further shipment to other parts of the country. In 2006, federal drug seizures of cocaine in Illinois totaled approximately 1,977 kilos.
In 2004, 11,787 individuals entered Illinois drug rehab programs for heroin abuse. Chicago, Illinois is a hub for the illicit drug trade and is one of the only cities in the country to receive heroin from all of the major sources; South America, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia and Mexico. Street gangs control much of the sale of heroin in the state. There is increased competition in the heroin market leading to decreased prices and increased availability. Almost 4 kilos of heroin were confiscated in Illinois in 2006.

Over 2,400 individuals were reportedly admitted to Illinois drug rehab centers for amphetamine/methamphetamine abuse from in 2004. Methamphetamine in Illinois comes from two main sources. The first source is Mexican drug trafficking organizations that smuggle methamphetamine into the state from California or Mexico in hefty amounts. Various gangs are responsible for the sale of methamphetamine once it reaches the state. There are also a number of local methamphetamine manufacturing operations in the state. While methamphetamine lab incidents are on the decline, there were 751 in 2006. Almost 3 kilos of methamphetamine were seized by law enforcement in Illinois in 2006.
Approximately 19,397 admissions to Illinois drug rehab centers in 2004 were attributed to marijuana abuse. Marijuana is undoubtedly easily obtained and the most used illicit drug in Illinois. Most of the marijuana in the state comes from Border States and is smuggled in by Mexican drug trafficking organizations, but local crops are increasing in number in many parts of the state. It is reported that 2,394.5 kilos of marijuana were seized by law enforcement agencies in 2006 in Illinois.

As many as 2,170 admissions to Illinois drug rehab facilities in 2004 were for prescription drugs and predatory drug abuse. Abuse involving a variety of prescription drugs including Ritalin, those containing hydrocordone, alprazolam, and phentermine, valium, methadone and OxyContin is increasing throughout the state. Prescription drugs intended for non-medical use are obtained illegally through medical professionals and by individuals who visit multiple doctors to obtain prescriptions. Club drugs are found in the Chicago area in particular because of the city’s international trade status. Drugs like ecstasy, GHB, Ketamine, PCP and others arrive in Chicago for sale or for transport to other areas of the country. About 300 grams of ecstasy were seized in Illinois in 2005.
