Indiana has a population of nearly 6.3 million and approximately 335 Illinois drug rehab facilities that reported 25,726 clients in 2005 It is estimated that some 518,000 individuals in Indiana needed drug rehab but did not receive it in 2004-2005. Indiana’s violent crime rate ranking is 29th in the nation and there were over 10,800 arrests for violent crimes in the state in 2004. Indiana’s status as an illicit drug transportation and distribution state no doubt contributes to the state’s violent crime rate.

Drug Rehab Indiana (cont..)

There were almost 12,500 individuals admitted to Indiana drug rehabs for cocaine abuse. Cocaine in both powder and crack form are readily available with crack concentrated mainly in the urban areas of the state.  Mexican drug trafficking organizations are chiefly responsible for smuggling cocaine into Indiana where Caucasian, Hispanic and African American groups distribute it throughout the state. Over 74 kilos of cocaine were seized by federal law enforcement in Indiana in 2006.

Heroin is not a major concern for law enforcement, but Indiana drug rehab programs report over 2,200 admissions for heroin abuse from 2003 to 2005. At one time, white heroin from Southeast Asia was the primary type of heroin available in Indiana, but law enforcement is seeing more Mexican black and brown tar heroin in recent years. Hispanic drug trafficking groups are thought to be responsible for smuggling Mexican heroin into the state. 5 ½ kilos of heroin were confiscated in Indiana in 2006.

Indiana drug rehab centers reportedly admitted 5,560 individuals for amphetamine/methamphetamine abuse from 2003 to 2005. More and more methamphetamine has been finding its way into the state over the last few years. Mexican drug trafficking organizations smuggle methamphetamine originating from Mexico or Southwestern Border States into Indiana. Methamphetamine is also produced within the state and there were 689 lab incidents in 2006. The methamphetamine produced locally is reportedly higher in purity than methamphetamine that is smuggled into the state by drug trafficking organizations. However, the local production apparently does not meet the demand for methamphetamine and so the market for “imported” methamphetamine remains strong. Over 35 kilos of methamphetamine were seized in 2005 and nearly 16 kilos of methamphetamine were seized in Indiana in 2006.

Approximately 25,755 individuals were admitted to Indiana drug rehab programs for marijuana addiction from 2003 to 2005. Much of Indiana’s marijuana is cultivated in Mexico and smuggled to various parts of the country including Indiana. Commercial vehicles that smuggle marijuana into the state may carry hundreds of pounds at a time. Some marijuana is also grown in the state. Marijuana crops may be grown outdoors on remote lands like private farms or forests, or it may be grown on public properties like National Forests. Marijuana growers may also produce indoor crops in individual homes or buildings situated on personal land. Over 382 kilos of marijuana were seized in Indiana in 2006.

As many as 7,100 individuals were reportedly admitted to Indiana drug rehab programs in from 2003 to 2005 for the abuse of prescription or club drugs. OxyContin may be the most commonly abused prescription drug in Indiana, but pseudoephedrine is likely the one most commonly stolen or obtained in other illegal ways because it is a drug used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.  Xanax, Valium and methadone are reported as frequently abused prescription drugs. Prescription drugs are often obtained through forged prescriptions, theft, the Internet and various other means. Club drugs, particularly ecstasy, GHB, Ketamine and LSD are not unseen in the state, but these types of drugs do not appear to pose as great a threat to Indiana as other drugs. Approximately 16,500 dosage units of ecstasy were confiscated in 2006.
