Almost 7,340 individuals were admitted to Kansas drug rehabs for cocaine abuse from 2002 to 2004. There is ample supply of both powder and crack cocaine in Kansas, particularly in an around Kansas City. The primary source for the cocaine smuggled into the state is from states like Texas and California where Mexican criminal drug organizations have strong ties.  A great deal of the cocaine smuggled into Kansas is changed into crack and then sold primarily in urban areas. Kansas City is also a stop along the way for cocaine making its way to final destinations like Chicago, New York and Detroit. In 2006, 403 kilos of cocaine were confiscated in the state.

There were just over 200 admissions to Kansas drug rehab programs for heroin abuse from 2002 to 2004. With Mexican black tar being the predominant type of heroin available, there is an increased presence of white heroin in Kansas. Mexican criminal drug organizations are likely responsible for both types of heroin. There is evidence that suggests that the heroin available is more pure and less expensive simultaneously which may result in increased usage of the drug. Over 29 kilos of heroin were confiscated in Kansas in 2005.

Approximately 4,700 admissions to Kansas drug rehab programs from 2002-2004 were attributed methamphetamine/ amphetamine abuse. Methamphetamine is found throughout Kansas. It arrives in the state in a couple of ways. Some methamphetamine that usually originates in Mexico is smuggled into the state. Some of the methamphetamine available is produced within the state in illegal, toxic manufacturing labs throughout the state. While the majority of Mexican methamphetamine is restricted to certain portions of the state, ice has been reported in much of the state. There have been over 2,500 meth-lab incidents in Kansas in the last five years and nearly 74 kilos of meth were confiscated in federal drug seizures in 2006. 

More than 11,000 individuals entered Kansas drug rehab for marijuana addiction from 2002 to 2004. Marijuana is found all over the state. Kansas City is a major receipt point for marijuana smuggled into the state. Mexican drug trafficking organizations are largely responsible for this marijuana. Marijuana crops are also raised within the state and inside plots seem to be becoming more numerous in areas in and around Kansas City. The marijuana produced in this manner is apparently stronger and is highly sought after. More than 3,270 kilos of marijuana were seized in Kansas in 2006.

As many as 1,333 admissions to Kansas drug rehab programs in from 2002 to 2004 could be attributed to the abuse of prescription, club or other drugs. Among prescription drugs that are used for non-medical purposes, OxyContin appears to be the most popular in the state. Drugs like OxyContin have similar effects to heroin, but are manufactured using standard and controlled methods so there is little variance with the drug’s potency and quality. Many other prescription drugs are abused including Alprazolam, Dilaudid, Phentermine, Prozac, Vicodin and Xanax. Individuals steal pharmaceuticals from pharmacies or medical facilities. They may also forge prescriptions, visit many different doctors to obtain prescriptions or obtain them from unscrupulous Internet sites. LSD can be found in the state along with predatory drugs like ecstasy. Kansas’ youth and young adults are the primary client base for criminals pushing these drugs. Ecstasy likely makes its way into Kansas from Washington State and Canada. 2.6 kilos, over 84,800, doses of ecstasy were confiscated in federal seizures in 2005.
