The availability of crack cocaine is growing in areas of the state, particularly metropolitan areas. In 2006, just of 2 kilos of cocaine were confiscated in the state.
Admissions to Maine drug rehab programs increased steadily from 2003-2005; 1,066 admissions in 2003, 1,189 in 2004 and 1,286 in 2005. Dominican drug trafficking organizations are chiefly responsible for smuggling heroin into Maine. The drugs are brought into the state via personal automobiles. There are centralized locales in the state where heroin use is common, but it is spreading to more parts of the state.

From 2003-2005, there were approximate 190 individuals entering Maine drug rehabs for methamphetamine abuse. Methamphetamine has not become the overwhelming threat in Maine as it has in other states. However, it looks as though that could change. It is becoming increasing available in the state and the natural environment is suited for the production of methamphetamine within the state with largely rural areas that are sparsely populated. In 2006, 19 dosage units of methamphetamine were confiscated by law enforcement and meth-lab incidents have gone from nonexistent in 2002 and 2003 to 5 in 2005.

It has been the most abused illegal substance in the state for some time now. There is no shortage of marijuana in Maine, some from local crops and more potent marijuana smuggled in from Canada. Much of the marijuana that enters the state from Canada arrives via commercial and personal vehicles travelling I-95. It is primarily Caucasian drug traffickers that control the sale of marijuana in Maine. Stricter laws regarding all facets of marijuana production and use are thought to be the most likely reason that users are turning to suppliers outside Maine to obtain their drug. Over 60 kilos of marijuana were impounded by federal authorities in Maine in 2006.

There are other drugs that pose concerns for law enforcement in Maine, particularly prescription drugs used for non-medicinal purposes and club drugs.
