There are areas of Maryland for which cocaine, particularly in crack form, is the biggest drug-related threat to law enforcement. Powder cocaine and crack cocaine can be found all over the state especially in locales near major metropolitan areas like D.C. The sale and distribution of cocaine in Maryland continues to bring violent behavior to the areas in which it pervasive. In 2005, approximately 119 kilos of cocaine were confiscated in the state and more than 188 kilos of cocaine were seized in 2006.

Maryland is home to Baltimore, the city that has long been known as one of most overwhelmed by heroin in the country. The city has more individuals addicted to heroin and more crimes associated with heroin abuse than nearly any other one city in the country. While heroin use occurs throughout the state, it is especially concentrated in Baltimore. The heroin available in the area is very pure and it is everywhere. Criminals that control the heroin trade live in areas surrounding Baltimore, bringing the problems to those areas as well. The widespread availability of heroin has led to abuse by younger individuals. 7.5 kilos of heroin were confiscated in federal drug seizures in 2006.

From 2003 to 2005 over 500 individuals entered drug rehab for methamphetamine/ amphetamine abuse. Methamphetamine does not pose a serious threat to Maryland at this time. It is found in a limited number of areas in the state and there does not appear to be a large market for the drug. A small amount of methamphetamine is manufactured in the state. From 2002 to 2006 there were a consistent number of meth-lab incidents; 1 or 2 annually. Some methamphetamine makes its way to the state from Southwest Border States. There are some indications that the presence of this methamphetamine may be growing. Approximately 600 grams of methamphetamine were confiscated in Maryland in 2006.

Marijuana abuse is cited as the reason for 30,215 admissions to Maryland drug rehab from 2003 to 2005. Marijuana is available in every part of the state. A small amount of marijuana is grown in areas of the state on personal and public lands. Most marijuana found in Maryland is smuggled into the state from Southwest Border States. 655 ½ kilos of marijuana were impounded in Maryland in 2006.

Over 12,700 individuals were admitted to Maryland drug rehab programs in 2004 and 2005 for the abuse of prescription, club or other drugs. The non-medical use of Oxycodone drugs like OxyContin is a concern in the state. OxyContin and drugs like Benzodiazepine, methadone and Klonopin are obtained through forged prescriptions or individuals visiting multiple doctors to obtain prescriptions, stolen from medical facilities or pharmacies and increasingly purchased from unethical Internet pharmaceutical websites. Other drugs of like ecstasy, Ketamine, GHB concern law enforcement agencies in Maryland. Ecstasy is the most frequently abused among these. The nightlife in Baltimore is conducive to the abuse of these drugs. Although club drug abuse has decreased a bit in recent years, almost ½ a kilo of ecstasy (22,491 dosage units) were seized by federal law enforcement in Maryland in 2006.
