Massachusetts Drug Rehab

In 2005 Massachusetts drug rehab facilities admitted 53,250 individuals. From 2004 and 2005, estimates indicate that 150,000 residents of the state needed drug rehab for illicit drug abuse and over 400,000 residents needed drug rehab for alcohol abuse. Neither of these groups was receiving drug rehab at the time the data was gathered. The state is ranked 18th in among the nation’s highest violent crime rates. There were over 7,100 arrests for violent crimes and 14,496 arrests for drug abuse violations in 2005. Columbian and Dominican criminal organizations are believed to be responsible for the majority of the illicit drugs present in the state. Drug Rehab Massachusetts (cont..)

Just under 9,700 individuals were admitted to Massachusetts drug rehab programs for the abuse of cocaine from 2003 to 2005. Both small and large amounts of cocaine can be obtained in virtually all parts of the state. Cocaine has primarily been smuggled into the state from New York. There is a growing amount of cocaine entering the state from Southwest Border States, Florida and Georgia. Cocaine is smuggled into the state using commercial vehicles and other vehicles and parcel services. Columbian, Dominican and Mexican criminal groups are responsible for trafficking cocaine in Massachusetts and the sale of the drug within the state is largely controlled by gangs. Some cocaine is made into crack cocaine once it reaches the state. Boston is particularly plagued with crack abuse and addiction. Federal agencies took possession of over 300 kilos of cocaine in Massachusetts in 2006.

Heroin is a significant problem for Massachusetts as evidenced by the fact that almost 74,200 admissions to Massachusetts drug rehabs from 2003-2005 were for heroin abuse and addiction. This insidious drug is found throughout the state. It mainly comes from New York, but heroin originating in Southwest Border States and countries like Columbia and the Dominican is being smuggled into the state in growing amounts. The cost for heroin has remained consistently low in the state but purity levels range from very poor quality to very high quality. 4.2 kilos of heroin were seized in the state in 2006.
