Approximately 3,785 admissions to Michigan drug rehab programs in 2005 were for the abuse of prescription, club or other drugs. The non-medical use of OxyContin is on the rise in Michigan. Vicodin and methadone are also commonly abused pharmaceuticals in Michigan. Abusers of these drugs use a variety of means to obtain them; theft from pharmacies, medical facilities or private homes, unethical healthcare professionals sell these drugs illegally, individuals go from doctor to doctor to obtain numerous prescriptions (called “doctor shopping”), and prescriptions are often forged. The number of offenses for OxyContin abuse double from 2002 to 2003, a clear indication that the non-medical use of and, for many, the ultimate addiction to these drugs is increasing. Ecstasy is the primary club drug of concern for Michigan. The drug is smuggled into the state by very organized groups from locations as diverse as New York City, the Netherlands and Canada. Club drugs are common on college campuses and in other areas where young adults gather. 1,609,517 dosage units of ecstasy (over 65 kilos) were confiscated in Michigan in 2006.
