6,979 individuals entered Mississippi drug rehab programs from 2001 to 2003 for cocaine abuse. Cocaine is widely available in Mississippi and it is a key problem in the state. Cocaine in the form of crack causes the most concern because it is so available, it is extremely addictive and its contribution to violent crimes. Cocaine is found in the large cities, areas around large cities, and less populated areas of the state; it is found everywhere. Columbian and Mexican criminal groups are responsible for smuggling cocaine into the state chiefly in commercial and personal vehicles. Much of the cocaine entering the state will be made into crack cocaine and sold by street gangs or individual distributors. 392.4 kilos of cocaine were seized in Mississippi in 2006.
Almost 1,740 admittances to Mississippi drug rehab centers from 2001 to 2003 were for treatment for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse. Methamphetamine poses nearly as severe a threat for Mississippi as crack does for similar reasons; it is becoming more readily available, it is cheap, it contributes to violent crimes and it is highly addictive. In addition, methamphetamine manufactured in labs using highly toxic chemicals cause harm to the natural environment. Mexican drug trafficking organizations with operations in the Southwest are blamed for smuggling most of the methamphetamine into the state. Methamphetamine produced in the state is done so chiefly by Caucasian groups. From 2002 to 2006, there were nearly 1,300 meth-lab incidents in the state. Almost 5 kilos of methamphetamine were impounded in federal drug seizures in 2006.
