From 2003-2005, 3,775 individuals were admitted to Montana drug rehab centers for methamphetamine/amphetamine abuse. All branches of law enforcement in the state agree that methamphetamine poses the most serious drug-related threat to Montana. Methamphetamine produced in Mexico accounts for most of the methamphetamine found in the state. Mexican drug trafficking organizations smuggle methamphetamine into the state. These criminal organizations have strong ties in the Pacific Northwest. This may help explain why this type of methamphetamine is most often found in western Montana. Montana is also plagued with local methamphetamine manufacturers. From 2002-2006, there were 215 meth-lab incidents in the state. Over 4 kilos of methamphetamine were confiscated in federal drug seizures in the state in 2006.
With over 4,000 admissions to Montana drug rehabs from 2003-2005 attributed to marijuana abuse, it is evident that marijuana is the most abused illicit drug in the state. A large portion of the marijuana found in Montana comes from Mexico. This marijuana is brought into the state by Mexican drug trafficking organizations. Stronger varieties of marijuana from Canada and Pacific Northwest areas are becoming more available in the state. Marijuana is also cultivated in Montana and is primarily grown inside rather than in outdoor plots. Almost 157 kilos of marijuana were seized in the state in 2006.

Approximately 1,357 admittances to Montana drug rehab facilities from 2003-2005 could be attributed to prescription or club drug abuse. As in much of the rest of the nation, OxyContin is a growing threat in the state. Other pain drugs like Dilaudid are rising in popularity, as well. Criminal groups or individuals use a variety of tactics to obtain prescription drugs illegally; prescription forgeries, thievery by medical employees, for example. Other prescription drugs sought after by illegal means in Montana include Vicodin, Xanax, Valium and Adderall. Club drugs do not currently pose a major threat to Montana. However, they are not unseen in the state. Small amounts of drugs like ecstasy, LSD, GHB and Ketamine are abused in more metropolitan areas and in campus communities. In 2006, 127,159 dosage units of ecstasy were confiscated in federal drug seizures in Montana.
