Drug Rehab New Hampshire (cont..)

Between 2003 and 2005, 1,465 individuals were admitted to New Hampshire drug rehabs citing cocaine as their drug of choice. Cocaine is available for sale in New Hampshire in both powder form and crack form. Dominican drug trafficking organizations have bases of operations in Massachusetts and are the chief suppliers of cocaine to New Hampshire. Areas of New Hampshire near theses supplies in Massachusetts have seen a considerable escalation in the amount of cocaine available. 7 ½ kilos of cocaine were impounded in federal seizures in 2006.

1,929 admissions to New Hampshire drug rehab centers from 2003-2005 were for heroin abuse. Heroin abuse occurs throughout New Hampshire. Heroin originating in New York makes its way to Massachusetts where Dominican drug trafficking organizations who operate in the region smuggle it into New Hampshire. The amount of heroin available for sale in the communities of New Hampshire is growing and shows no immediate signs of declining. The street level cost for heroin has not changed significantly for some years, but heroin found in the state in recent years has been of a lower quality than that of heroin previously available.

more New Hampshire drug rehab info

With less than 100 individuals entering New Hampshire drug rehabs with methamphetamine/ amphetamine being their main drug of abuse from 2003-2005, it might be easy to think methamphetamine poses little threat to the state. However, Methamphetamine can be found throughout the state and is becoming more and more prevalent in recent years. Ice in particular has increased in popularity in the state recently. The methamphetamine found in New Hampshire comes mainly from Mexico and enters the state mainly through parcel services. Some methamphetamine from Western US states is transported into New Hampshire in commercial or private motor vehicles. Local manufacture of methamphetamine does not appear to be a significant issue for law enforcement presently. In the five years from 2002 to 2006, there were 12 meth lab seizures in the state. About 100 grams of methamphetamine were seized in the state in 2006.

2,278 individuals entered New Hampshire drug rehab centers reporting marijuana as their main drug of choice from 2003 to 2005. Marijuana is abused more than any other illicit drug in New Hampshire. Much of the marijuana available in the state originates in Border States like Arizona and California. The illicit drug is smuggled into the state by way of motor vehicles and small amounts are shipped using parcel services. Some marijuana from Canada is smuggled into the state using hikers, or even drops from helicopters. Marijuana is grown within the state as well, but locally grown crops are decreasing. Marijuana grown using aquiculture methods does appear to be increasing as opposed to crops grown in open air. In 2005, 789 locally grown marijuana plants were destroyed in the state and over 43 kilos of marijuana were confiscated as a result of federal drug seizures in 2006.

Almost 800 entrants to New Hampshire drug rehab programs from 2003-2005 reported prescription, club or other drugs as their drug of choice. Prescription drugs illegally obtained and used for recreational purposes is a newer problem in New Hampshire. Criminals forge prescriptions, purchase pharmaceuticals from unscrupulous Internet sites or work in groups going from doctor to doctor to get numerous prescriptions to get their hands on powerful and addictive prescription drugs. OxyContin, a powerful pain drug that creates effects similar to those produced by heroin for the abuser, is frequently obtained illegally and abused. Club drugs, primarily ecstasy, are abundant in the state and are the drugs of choice for many younger citizens of New Hampshire. Clubs, raves and postsecondary school campuses are common locations for the abuse of ecstasy. Ecstasy is smuggled into the state from New York City and from Canada. 9,517 dosage units of ecstasy were confiscated in the state in 2005.
