Drug Rehab New Jersey (cont..)
More than 41% of all admissions to New Jersey drug rehab programs for the 3 year period From 2004-2006 were attributed to heroin abuse. That is an astonishing 67,811 admissions, an average of almost 22,604 annually. Looking only at these numbers, it is obvious that heroin poses the most significant drug-related threat in the state. Most of the heroin available in the state is Columbian in origin and has some of the highest levels of purity in the nation. The quality of the heroin available coupled with its inexpensive cost appeals to a great number of abusers, increasingly younger abusers. Heroin is smuggled into the state via private and commercial aircraft and land vehicles with commercial air services being the primary means for individuals to carry the illicit drug into the state. Federal drug seizures in the state in 2006 resulted in the confiscation of more than 63 kilos of heroin.
Between 2004 and 2006, the number of individuals admitted to New Jersey drug rehabs reporting cocaine as their drug of choice remained constant. There were 5,864 admissions in 2004, 6,043 in 2005 and 6,298 in 2006. Cocaine is the most widespread drug in New Jersey and is available throughout the state. Crack cocaine is also widely found in the state, particularly in poorer areas of the state. There is a large amount of cocaine stored in New Jersey and plenty available for sale. Columbian and Dominican criminal groups supply primarily African American and Dominican dealers with cocaine to sell in the state. Cocaine enters the state from South America and Border States by way of commercial and personal motor vehicles. New Jersey also serves as a main route for international drug trafficking groups dealing in cocaine. Nearly 1,932 kilos of cocaine were impounded as a result of federal drug seizures conducted in the state in 2006.

547 individuals entered New Jersey drug rehabs naming methamphetamine/amphetamine as their drug of choice. This is a deceptively low number compared to admissions for other illicit drugs, but methamphetamine is a significant issue for New Jersey law enforcement. Mexican organizations smuggle methamphetamine from Western states and from Mexico. And drug traffickers from the Philippines are receiving large shipments of methamphetamine from the Philippines as well as from Mexico. Southern New Jersey in particular is inundated with ice from L.A. Ice is transported by either motor vehicle of a variety of package delivery services. Methamphetamine is also produced within the state in hidden labs, specifically in the Southern parts of the state. From 2002-2006, 8 meth-labs were seized in the state and 6.6 kilos of methamphetamine were confiscated in the state in 2006.
Over 20,800 individuals were admitted to New Jersey drug rehab programs reporting their primary drug of abuse as marijuana. As in so many other areas of the country, marijuana is highly available in New Jersey. Border States supply New Jersey with Mexican grown marijuana by way of commercial and private vehicles, national and commercial package delivery services and commercial aircraft. This accounts for the majority of the marijuana smuggled into the state although marijuana from Canada and Jamaica are also available in New Jersey. In more pastoral parts of the state, cultivators grow their own marijuana in both open air plots and inside plots. In 2005, 1,960 marijuana plants were destroyed, 37 cultivation plots were destroyed and 33 crops were confiscated in New Jersey. Nearly 50 kilos of marijuana were seized in the state in 2006.

Prescriptions are frequently forged to obtain prescription drugs. Individuals may visit several different medical offices to obtain multiple prescriptions for one particular drug. Devious Internet pharmacy sites that do not require a physician’s prescription dispense prescription drugs through the mail. A number of medicinal drugs are targeted for diversion in the state. The main ones are Percocet, OxyContin, Xanax, Vicodin and Hydrocodone products like Lorcet and Norco.
