Drug Rehab New Mexico (cont..)
From 2003 to 2004, fewer than 800 admittances to New Mexico drug rehab programs were to treat cocaine abuse as the primary issue. Cocaine is abused all over the state and officials in the state repeatedly name the trafficking of cocaine in powder and crack form as their primary concern. Crack cocaine abuse is eroding some smaller communities as well as inner cities in New Mexico. Violent crime is up in places where crack is a particular concern and it is threatening not only those who abuse it, but others in these areas. Border areas of New Mexico serve as a key entry point for illicit drugs including cocaine. Mexican drug trafficking organizations are using New Mexico’s road system to move larger and larger amounts of cocaine into and through the state. Cocaine bound for areas like Denver, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, and Chicago is routinely moved through New Mexico. More recently added targets include Midwest and East Coast states. Of course, a portion of the cocaine smuggled into the state is intended for sale within New Mexico. Often, powder cocaine is transported to crack dealers who make the powder into crack cocaine to be sold on the streets. 672 kilos of cocaine were seized in the state in 2006.
868 entrants to New Mexico drug rehab facilities cited heroin as their drug of choice. Heroin generally makes its way into New Mexico from Mexican states carried by individuals. Some may also be transported by motor vehicle. There has been a steady growth of heroin supplies in the state in recent years. Most of the heroin seen in the state is of the Mexican black or brown tar variety with black tar being the most in demand in areas like Albuquerque. One locale in New Mexico, the Espanola Valley, has the dubious distinction of repeatedly having the greatest number of heroin overdoses per capita in the country. 6.8 kilos of heroin were confiscated in federal drug seizures in 2006.

584 individuals named methamphetamine/amphetamine as their primary drug of abuse upon entering New Mexico drug rehab in 2003-2004. Methamphetamine is both manufactured within the state and smuggled into the state primarily by Mexican drug trafficking groups. Most of the methamphetamine found in the state is produced in Mexico, smuggled to cities like L.A. and Phoenix and then transported to New Mexico for consumption. The increased presence of Mexican methamphetamine may have contributed to the steep decline in the number of local meth lab operations in the state. Meth lab seizures dropped significantly from 2003 to 2006; 194 seizures in 2003, 120 in 2004, 59 in 2005 and 6 in 2006. However, there are still some labs in the state operating in isolated areas. Methamphetamine-related law enforcement activities are particularly common in the area of the eastern side of the state where New Mexico meets Texas and in the northwest corner where Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado all meet. In 2006, almost 65 kilos of methamphetamine were confiscated in the state.
Marijuana is the drug of choice for over 780 abusers entering New Mexico drug rehab centers in 2003-2004. More marijuana is confiscated in New Mexico than in any illicit drug. Much of it is bound for eastern states. Marijuana is transported into and through the state in private and commercial vehicles. Mexican marijuana is the most common type of marijuana found in New Mexico. Some marijuana is grown locally. The state has extensive National Forest property which is a prime area for local growers. Federal drug seizures conducted in New Mexico in 2006 resulted in the confiscation of over 49,500 kilos of marijuana.

Just over 3,000 individuals entered New Mexico drug rehabs for the abuse of prescription or club drugs. Hydrocodone and Oxycodone drugs are the most diverted prescription medications in the state. There are a number of ways these drugs are acquired:
- The unethical sale or disbursement of prescription drugs by medical practitioners and staff
- Being seen in a number of medical offices to acquire multiple prescriptions for controlled substances
- Forging physician signatures on stolen prescription pads or creating bogus prescriptions with forged signature
- Thievery of pharmaceuticals while they are mid transport to legitimate destinations
- Travelling to Mexico to take advantage of unrestrictive Mexican laws that allow for the sale of controlled substances over the counter
Other drugs, club drugs, are available in New Mexico as well. Ecstasy, Ketamine, LSD and GHB are some of these drugs seen in the state. Raves are still frequent events in the state and are a prime target for criminals to sell these dangerous drugs to New Mexico’s youth. A large amount of club drugs and hallucinogenic drugs confiscated were determined to be from western cities like L.A. and Phoenix. 3,251 dosage units of ecstasy were seized in New Mexico in 2005 and nearly 1,000 were seized in 2006.
