Drug Rehab New York (cont..)
New York State is the 3rd most populous state in the union. New York City is the most populated city in the country and the 13th most populated city in the world. New York City is a central location for criminals practicing the drug trafficking trade. A number of different drug trafficking organizations have operations in the city. The vast population generates a large market for these organizations. The drug trafficking organizations in the city also provide supplies of illicit drugs their contacts in other parts of the Eastern US, to Canada and to Europe.
2005 admissions to New York drug rehab programs for cocaine abuse as the primary drug issue showed an increase over previous years. There were 44,224 admissions in 2003, 44,545 in 2004 and 50,637 in 2005, a 14% increase. Columbian and Mexican drug trafficking organizations are ultimately responsible for the cocaine that makes its way into New York. They transport extremely large amounts of principally powder cocaine by way of commercial trucks and hidden in freight entering the state. Once in New York, the cocaine is dispersed to various organizations where it will be further delivered to dealers to sell on the street or to be transported to groups in other states. The major drug trafficking organizations have large stores of cocaine in Border States which are used to supply markets in New York and other parts of the country. Some parts of the state are also supplied directly from criminal groups in Florida and Puerto Rico. Cocaine is a problem in many parts of the state; urban, suburban and rural alike. Crack is particularly a problem in poorer neighborhoods in major metropolitan areas and contributes to violent crimes in those areas. Much of the crack available is made within the state from powder cocaine, but there are indications that cocaine may be being smuggled into the already in crack form.

With 173,797 New York drug rehab entrants reporting heroin as their primary drug of abuse, it is easy to imagine the extent of the heroin problem in the state. Drug trafficking organizations from Columbia and the Dominican have bases of operations in New York and bear the responsibility for supplying much of the state’s heroin. The purity levels of this heroin are higher than most heroin found anywhere around the globe. These criminal masterminds use traditional techniques like human couriers and commercial air and motor vehicles, but they have also made use of more creative means to smuggle this deadly drug into their markets. A variety of every day products are used to hide heroin, items like shoes, furniture and golf bags. Cloth is sometimes saturated with heroin before being shipped to its destination. Heroin can even be infused into plastic which is then made into ordinary objects and then recaptured by sophisticated techniques used to draw out the chemical heroin upon arrival at the destination. There have even been confirmed cases of the use of small animals being used to smuggle heroin; puppies were found to have heroin implanted inside them by surgical means. These malevolent illicit drug traffickers will use any means necessary to achieve their goal; making lots of money. Almost 295 kilos of heroin were recovered in federal drug seizures in 2006.
2,042 individuals were admitted to New York drug rehab programs citing methamphetamine/ amphetamine abuse as their chief concern from 2003-2005. The presence of methamphetamine in New York appears to be growing. Methamphetamine is supplied to dealers in the state in two ways. The first is through shipments smuggled into the state from Border States in the southwest. Dealers in and around New York City mainly distribute crystal methamphetamine that originate in West Coast States. The second way methamphetamine is supplied to abusers in the state is through the manufacture of methamphetamine within the state. This methamphetamine supplies dealers in upstate New York in particular. The number of methamphetamine manufacturing labs in the state is apparently growing. In 2005 there were 20 methamphetamine lab seizures and there were 35 in 2006. Over 3 kilos (53,763 dosage units) of methamphetamine were confiscated in New York in 2006.
