The drug heroin is widely available in most cities in Rhode Island. Between 2003 and 2005, approximately 14,431 individuals were admitted to Rhode Island drug rehab programs for addiction to heroin and other opiates. In 2007, law enforcement agencies seized black tar heroin for the first time; previous to this, the most common heroin found in Rhode Island was Colombian heroin. Law enforcement officials are concerned with the rising number of heroin overdoses, mainly because some of the heroin distributors are mixing the drug with fentanyl (which makes it very potent). Heroin is usually transported by Dominican, Colombian, and Puerto Rican drug traffickers via airplane, train, and land vehicles and then distributed to other areas. Law enforcement agencies confiscated approximately 3.5 kilograms of heroin in 2006.
