The main means of drug trafficking through Tennessee is through the state highway systems that touch the state’s four major cities. Another important factor is that the state itself is connected to eight other states, allowing the highway systems to carry large volumes of traffic and transporting drugs throughout Tennessee as well as the other states. Tennessee is mainly a transshipment and “user” state, serving as a drug hub for other areas of the United States. The only drug locally grown is marijuana.
Between the years of 2002 and 2004, an estimated 4,977 individuals were admitted to Tennessee drug rehab programs for cocaine abuse and addiction. Tennessee usually obtains its cocaine from areas in the western United States like Texas, Illinois, Georgia, and California. Once it is transported into the state, it is distributed from one of the main hubs: Hamilton, Davidson, and Shelby counties. Research has shown that many cocaine abusers in Tennessee usually consume the drug as crack (powdered cocaine). Crack cocaine has recently become the most abused drug in the state. The state has also reported an increase in the importation of drugs by Mexican drug trafficking organizations.

Most of Tennessee’s heroin abusers are long-time users. In the past, the heroin drug trafficking situation has been stable. Recently, studies have noticed an increase in the abuse and availability of heroin, especially via the highway systems. The Mexican Black Tar and Southeast Asian heroin found in Tennessee is usually imported from Texas and New York.
Tennessee drug rehab programs are continuing to treat individuals for addiction to methamphetamine which is continually increasing in demand. Reports indicated that in 2005, Tennessee accounted for 75 percent of the methamphetamine lab seizures in the Southeast portion of the United States, much of the drug being transported from Mexico and other boarding states. The number of lab seizures is decreasing since new laws were enforced that required medications containing ingredients used in the manufacture of methamphetamine to be stored behind pharmacy counters. In 2005, federal agents seized 337 meth labs in the state.
Tennessee has noted an increase in “club drugs” addiction and abuse. The main club drugs being abused are MDMA (ecstasy), LSD, and GHB. The most common place where these drugs are found is at raves and dance parties (mainly in Nashville and Knoxville) as well as college campuses. Many of these club drugs are imported from areas such as New York, Georgia, and Florida. Other heavily abused drugs in Tennessee are hydromorphone, hydrocodone, meperidine, amphetamine, Dilaudid, and morphine.
