Due to Virginia’s location on the map, it has become a stop for drug trafficking organizations moving across the east coast (the two largest hubs being New York City and Miami). Drugs such as Cocaine, MDMA, and methamphetamine pose the largest threat in Virginia and are a continuing problem. There are numerous meth lab incidents each year and marijuana distribution is found in many areas throughout the state.
Between 2002 and 2004, an estimated 23,838 individuals were admitted to Virginia drug rehab programs for cocaine abuse and addiction. Crack cocaine and powder cocaine continue to be a problem throughout the state. Violence trends are on the rise and studies show a correlation between cocaine abuse and the rising crime rate, especially in urban areas. Dominican and Colombian drug trafficking organizations in New York City are responsible for the majority of the cocaine and crack in Virginia, although there has been a noticeable increase of drug trafficking from Mexican sources in the southwestern United States (specifically North Carolina and Georgia) as well. In 2006, it was noted that approximately 266.4 kilograms of cocaine was seized from federal agents in Virginia.

Approximately 16,553 individuals were reportedly admitted to Virginia drug rehab programs for heroin or other opiates addiction in 2003. Research has noted that most of the heroin distribution in Virginia occurs in areas such as Richmond and Tidewater; in these areas, there is a significant long-term heroin abusing population. The source of this heroin comes mostly from the Portsmouth region. Heroin is packaged two ways: usually in the Norfolk area, it is in gelatin capsules and in other parts of the state it is in small, usually colored or marked Ziploc baggies.
As with many other states, federal laws in Virginia were implemented to regulate medications containing ingredients used in the manufacture of methamphetamine. Studies have shown that the number of local methamphetamine labs has decreased over the years. In 2006, federal agents seized around 13.5 kilograms of methamphetamine. There is still methamphetamine lab activity, mostly occurring in the southwestern corner of the state (boarding West Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky). Containing the highest percentage of methamphetamine abusers in Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley region has an expansion of Mexican drug traffickers that import methamphetamine into the area. Methamphetamine has become a drug of choice for people at clubs and raves as well.

Other drugs that are commonly associated with the rave scene are MDMA, GHB, and Ketamine. These are all widely abused and available throughout the nightlife/rave communities.
