Drug Rehab Washington (cont..)
Drug abuse is often associated with violence. Perhaps the most probable explanation of Washington’s high violent crime rate is that it shares a border with Canada. This connection with Canada makes Washington a key transshipment point for not only illegal drugs, but also money. Two key drugs being trafficked from Canada are Canadian marijuana (street name BC Bud) and MDMA (ecstasy). Another drug that is widely available in Washington is crystal methamphetamine that is distributed by Mexican drug trafficking organizations. This and other large scale drug trafficking organizations are usually found in the greater Yakima Valley. This area is known for the distribution of drugs throughout the rest of the United States. Illegal organizations like these are believed to be using Washington and the Yakima Valley to launder money made in the drug trade as well.
Between the years of 2003 and 2005, an estimated 14,548 individuals were admitted to Washington drug rehab programs for cocaine abuse and addiction alone. In 2006, federal authorities confiscated approximately 622 kilograms of cocaine. Cocaine and crack cocaine is reportedly abused in low income, urban areas and is readily available. Mexican drug trafficking organizations control the wholesale quantity of cocaine in Washington and coordinate with other large scale traffickers in California and Mexico. Since Washington is so close to the Canada border, cocaine is usually smuggled into Canada for redistribution.

According to data reports, an estimated 23,713 individuals were admitted to Washington drug rehab programs for addiction to heroin and other opiates from 2003 to 2005. Black tar heroin is smuggled into Washington by Mexican drug trafficking organizations. These criminal organizations also traffic methamphetamine and cocaine into Washington. The black tar heroin comes from Mexico and in turn is transported from select distribution cities in California to western and eastern Washington.
One of the most abused drugs in Washington is methamphetamine and it poses a significant problem in the local communities. Two different forms of methamphetamine, powder and crystal methamphetamine are readily available. The crystal methamphetamine form is preferred over others and dominates the market in Washington. The majority of methamphetamine is actually produced in Mexico and distributed through Mexican drug trafficking organizations into Washington. Studies show that although methamphetamine lab incidents still occur, they have declined greatly over the years.
Washington also seems to be a transshipment point for many synthetic drugs such as GHB, LSD, and MDMA. Federal agents seized 290 kilograms of MDMA (ecstasy) in 2006 and it continues to be an escalating problem in Washington. Federal agents have noted an increasing amount of bulk shipment incidents at the United States/Canada border. Washington seems to be a distribution point of MDMA for various United States areas.

From 2003 to 2005, an estimated 27,057 individuals were reportedly admitted to Washington drug rehab programs for marijuana addiction and abuse. Marijuana is a drug that is readily available in the state of Washington. It is grown locally (the most common type) and also imported from places such as Mexico and British Columbia. As with drugs such as ecstasy, Washington serves as a transshipment point for marijuana being distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, federal agents confiscated an outstanding 4,363 kilograms of marijuana in Washington.
From 2003 to 2005 there were over 1,000 admissions to Washington drug rehab programs for prescription drug addiction. The abuse and trafficking of prescription drugs is a large concern throughout the United States, especially in younger age groups. In Washington the main pharmaceutical concern is oxycodone, hydrocodone, and anabolic steroids. Prescription drugs are obtained a number of ways: through the illegal sale and distribution by those in the healthcare field, by individuals who go from doctor to doctor to get multiple prescriptions, through forged prescriptions, theft by healthcare employees, robbery of pharmacies or other healthcare facilities and increasingly via purchase on the Internet.
