Research indicates that the violent crime rate of Wyoming is affected by the drug situation in the state. Wyoming’s drug scene is dominated by drug trafficking organizations that push the distribution of drugs like cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine. These local traffickers are supplied by multiple distributors such as the southwest border states, Colorado, and Mexico. Research indicates that the demand for heroin is not particularly high in Wyoming; instead, the main illicit drug being abused is methamphetamine. Also, club drugs such as MDMA and cocaine are also readily abused in Wyoming.

Between the years of 2002 and 2004, approximately 272 individuals were admitted to Wyoming drug rehab programs for cocaine abuse and addiction. Demand for cocaine has declined throughout recent years in Wyoming. Cheyenne and Laramie are the focus areas when dealing with cocaine distribution. The drug Crack can also be found in Wyoming, however, it is not in significant quantities. In fact, federal law enforcement agents only seized about 1 kilogram of cocaine in 2006.

Only 49 individuals were reportedly admitted to Wyoming drug rehab programs for addiction to heroin or other opiates between 2002 and 2004. Although heroin does not pose a serious problem in Wyoming, it is available. The main route of heroin into Wyoming comes from Utah. More of those Wyoming drug rehab admissions were due to addiction to other drugs such as methamphetamine and club drugs.

Wyoming drug rehab programs are continuing to treat individuals for addiction to methamphetamine which remains the most serious drug threat in the state. In fact, methamphetamine arrests have surpassed arrests for all other drugs in Wyoming and these numbers are still on the rise. Data indicates that federal law enforcement agents seized 8.6 kilograms of methamphetamine in 2006. This number is nearly 8 times that of the cocaine seizures made in Wyoming in 2006. The Wyoming law enforcement noted a direct correlation between violent crimes, domestic violence, and child abuse with methamphetamine abuse in the state. This has definitely heightened law enforcement’s concern with methamphetamine abuse throughout the state.

There was an outstanding 2,810 individuals admitted to Wyoming drug rehab programs from 2002 to 2004 for marijuana abuse. Aside from being a widely abused drug, it is also grown and distributed throughout Wyoming. A high percentage of marijuana being brought into Wyoming is from Mexico, British Columbia, and Canada.
